My friend Andy and I are going to the Red Sox-Yankees game tonight with our respective fiancees. I’ll try to bring a real camera and take some actual pictures (rather than forcing you to squint at my cell phone photos).
So the hammer has come down on Videogate and in the end, I do think the whole thing was overblown–and also mystifying on the part of Belichick & Co. What sucks the most is how this has cost the Patriots most of that grudging respect they’d earned from the media and non-NE fans. Turns out there are a lot of Patriots haters. Now I know what it feels like to be a Yankees fan (no offense, Kate!).
None taken. Have a great time with Andy et al. tonight!
Also: GO YANKS!
As a Mets fan I guess I’ll root for the Red Sox. But this year, we have Pedro!
The difference between the Yankees and Pats are that the Pats have to spend in a salary cap system. We just cant go out and buy players. We have to be smarter and more frugal then every other team in the league. Hey, I know, it hurts being this good. 😉
@John – You can have Pedro. Hes one bad pitch away from his arm falling off.
@John – You wrote, “But this year, we have Pedro!”
I think that should read “But this MONTH, we have Pedro!” seeing as how he just came off of Six Million Dollar Man surgery. The problem is, six million doesn’t buy as many mango trees as it once did.
I remember when the Sox let Pedro fly and he had a bang-up start with the Mets, all of the BoSox bandwagoneers started screaming at management for allowing ‘The Greatest Pitcher that Ever Lived’ to go to New York (even if it wasn’t the Yankees – it was still NYC).
Me, I thought they made the smart play as they weren’t looking one year ahead but several miles downstream. Pedro was beginning to fray and as Big Guy mentioned, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets beaned by an appendage. (In one of baseball’s funny little bylaws – if you take a body part upside the cabeza, it’s an automatic two-bagger.)
I do not mean to begrudge Pedro. He WAS a GREAT pitcher and his time here in Boston was filled with special memories. I’ve written a Post before where I documented those players whose jerseys you could still wear even if they left town. (Example – Should Big Papi leave, he gets a lifelong pass. Nomahhhhh gets moth-balled).
Pedro’s on the Papi list, no matter how many people he shot on his way out of town. He still did enough here to warrant that inclusion.
Plus any guy caught on Live TV wearing a Yoda mask in the dugout deserves a few special props.
“Hmmmm, once great pitcher… was I.”
